Trauma comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes. There is no one standard for what a traumatic event is for everyone. People are all different and have different points of view on any given situation. There might be something that one person finds traumatic such as being in a car accident whereas for someone else, that same event is not a traumatizing event.
Many times people are left feeling that post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is only something that people in the military experience. Society is not very emotionally open to acknowledging or discussing other events that leave the person experiencing PTSD.
PTSD is real, and people experiencing that level of anxiety have nightmares and flashbacks are already shaming themselves, and often blame themselves. This misinformation keeps the people suffering from PTSD in the same cycle where if they reach out and receive treatment, their quality of life could be improved.
You are not alone. Many people have dealt with, or are dealing with PTSD. No matter what your traumatic event is, reaching out for help can be positive. When talking to a professional, you can also get any questions or doubts cleared up. I know it can feel as if you are not worth it. Your event isn’t “large enough”, or you feel that you have no support. I want you to know that you do have support and lots of love being sent your way. It takes a lot of courage to ask for help.
